One of the most powerful advantages of metal packaging is its ability to preserve products for longer. But why is metal so effective at preservation? At Boixadós, we’ll explain it from both a technical and practical perspective.
The three enemies of preservation. Most food, chemical, or pharmaceutical products degrade due to three main factors:
- Oxygen: causes oxidation and loss of properties
- Light: causes photodegradation, loss of color, flavor, and nutrients
- Humidity: facilitates microbial growth and unwanted chemical reactions
How metal packaging protects products
1. Total barrier against oxygen
Metal is 100% impermeable to oxygen. Unlike plastic (which has some permeability), metal ensures that not a single oxygen molecule comes into contact with the product.
2. Absolute protection from light
Metal containers are completely opaque, blocking 100% of UV and visible light. This is especially critical for photosensitive products such as oils, beers, medicines, or cosmetics.
3. Moisture resistance
The metal does not allow the passage of water vapor, maintaining the inside of the container at the desired humidity levels.
Complementary technologies
Metal packaging allows for the integration of additional preservation technologies:
- Modified atmosphere (MAP): replacement of indoor air with inert gases
- Vaccuum packaging: complete removal of oxygen
- Sterilization: autoclave processes that do no alter containers
Benefits beyond preservation
Waste reduction: Less expired product means less economic and environmental loss.
Commercial flexibility: Longer shelf life allows export to distant markets and better stock management.
Maintenance of organoleptic properties: The product reaches the consumer with the same taste, aroma and texture as the day it was packaged.
The ability of metal packaging to extend product shelf life isn’t magic: it’s science. The combination of a complete barrier against oxygen, light, and moisture makes metal the best option for products requiring optimal preservation.
